Wet your appetite with a shipwreck or two!

Across the Story Bridge

Children's Book Council of Australia has announced the 2010 notable and shortlist books with the theme for Children's book week being  "Across the Story Bridge".

The library is in full swing with plans to build a boat bridge from Big Pigeon to Little Pigeon island.  To move from one island to the other you will need to step onto a boat. (don't worry these professionals know how to attach each boat together) In each of the boats you step onto a fisherman will read you a short story or will tell you one of their own tales.

Who will have the biggest and most interesting tale to tell?  Find out by joining in and placing your name on the list at the library.  The date for our story bridge has been set for Saturday 14th August the week before the winners are announced.

Follow the link by clicking on Children's Book Council at the top of the post near the logo.  You will find all of the notable and shortlisted books along with some great ideas on how to celebrate this wonderful event.

Read around the islands

Big Pigeon Library is gearing up for their annual "Read Around The Islands".  The book chosen for the 2010 season is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. For those of you who are new to this event I have listed a brief description of the event and some pointers that will assist you along the way.  The purpose of this event is for the Community to read the same book at the same time and then discuss the book at a get together.  This get together will be held in the library on Monday 17th May 2010 starting at 6.00pm. Happy reading.

Funding Received For Multimedia Equipment

Big Pigeon Public Library
is in celebration mode after it was announced this week the library will receive funding towards new multimedia equipment. The staff and members of the library and the Big Pigeon community send their thank yous to the agencies involved. The new projector has been on the Library's wish list for the last few years and the funding received has now made this purchase possible.

One of the guests speakers for the evening will be Mr Finn Pirro (PEC). Mr Pirro will be cutting a ribbon on this new piece of equipment rather than the customary cracking of a bottle. We all know champagne and electricity do not go down well together!

Mr Frankie Palsaert our Library Technician will also inform us of the Occupational Health and Safety issues concerning multimedia equipment. View Frankie's "Occupational Health and Safety" page for further information.

We look forward to your company on the night. Please contact us or inform the library staff at the circulation desk if you are attending this evening.

The new projector will be available for members to use at home and will be available for borrowing starting from next week. We are holding a celebratory evening on Friday 12 March commencing at 6pm.

Sailing In...Authors visiting the library

Big Pigeon Public Library has landed a wonderful catch of mutineers.....a trio of  authors visiting our library next month on the 20th March.  Hang up the fishing rods, put the bait back into the freezer and come and join us for a day of adventures on the high seas.

Our first visitor,  Max Cramer the author of "Treasures, Tragedies and Triumphs of the Batavia Coast" will have you sitting on the edge of your tinny with his storytelling.  Max is a well know local identity and you will hear first hand what it was like to discover a shipwreck.

Our next author is the well known children's author Deborah Lisson.  Deborah has written a historical fiction novel titled "The Devil's Own"  This book is suitable for upper primary students and  covers the subject areas of shipwrecks and time travel centred around the famous Batavia.  This book is highly recommended to be read under a full moon!

The third author for the day, one you must hang around for, is Mike Dash.  Mike's novel  "Batavia's Graveyard" covers the exciting and fascinating story of shipwreck, mutiny, massacre and survival.  Mike will give us a brief overview on how he approached his research for his novel and the process of publishing a historical non-fiction book.

At the conclusion of the session those who would like to meet us down at the main jetty can have the opportunity of joining us in the longboat. (pictured above) This longboat is a replica of the vessel that sailed  to Java to get help for the survivors of the Batavia.......another story for another day.
